Sunburned Hand of the Man are an enigmatic experimental collective with a stunningly large discography and frequent personnel changes. Incorporating elements of free jazz, space rock, psych-rock, hypno krautrock, drone, folk, funk, punk, and dirty synth, their live shows are a surprise every time — even to them, usually — ranging from wild improvisatory freak-outs to more coherently sculpted material careening from unsettling to hypnotic to mellow.According to Sean Kitching, writing in The Quietus in 2016, “Sunburned at their best are capable of taking the listener on a shamanic, boogie-fueled trip outside of quotidian reality. Just about a couple weeks ago, your faithful correspondent had a filling fall out... another chapter in the endless teeth saga. Got it fixed at the dentist, who said "Oy lad you needs a root canal." (This dental work happened in Victorian London.) So it was off to the root canaler, and then a couple days after that the second shingles shot which had been previously scheduled. The reaction to the shot was poor... worse that the first shot, worse than a flu shot, worse than a covid shot — the symptoms being the body activating the immune system against the particular antigen. Good! Better than getting shingles. We ain't afraid of vaccines. Or acetaminophen for that matter. And then, just this morning, still recovering from the chills / sweats / achey joints / head fog, this very morning during breakfast, most of that tooth broke off. So if you do come to the show tomorrow, and you see Mark looking even more like a hillbilly than usual, permission to mock him is granted.
